Underground in Znojmo
Historical Underground in Znojmo was developed in the 14th century and ranks among the largest labyrinths in Central Europe. Ventilation shafts, smoke-flues and wells of the intricate underground system of tunnels are still admired by its visitors. The tunnel is estimated to be about 27 kilometres long and constructed through more than four floors under the historical centre of the city of Znojmo.
The Subterranean Complex’s original purpose was a cellar for agricultural products and wine. Such storage was an integral part of each house. In wartimes tunnels served as indivisible strategic part of the city fort system. However, the fact that there are no plans of tunnels in the city archives is very surprising. Extremely intricate system in both horizontal and vertical directions supports the premise of its usage during wartimes.
Dewatering system was violated by gradual siltation of the underground area after the Second World War. It was caused by the removal of ruins of which the most visible impact was demonstrated by the city communication accidents at the beginning of the 60s. Therefore a far reaching research and sanitation was begun in 1963. The Subterranean Complex’s main aim is to serve its visitors nowadays. A visitor tour that is estimated to be 800 metres long starts at the Slepičí trh and ends in the Obroková street.
The route was extended in 2009 by the exposition “Mysterious Underground” that includes alchemist laboratory, alive rocks, bats, elves or dungeons and is accompanied by special audiovisual light show.
Since October 2013 are available another parts of the underground labyrint. Especially for those who like adventure and little bit of adrenalin. These routes are intended for people who don't mind a little water, mud, climbing on iron steps, replacing short ladders, walking bent and sometimes on all fours and a little bit of effort. It's surely worth a try.
