Castle Špilberk

Špilberk Castle was established as a royal castle in the 13th century during the reign of the Přemysl clan. After the successful defence against the Swedish army in 1645 it was rebuilt into a massive Baroque fortress. It had served consecutively as both a jail and a casern from the end of the 18th century until the sixties when it was declared a national heritage monument and became the seat of The Brno City Museum. Nowadays it offers plenty of expositions and exhibitions as well as renowned Casemates – the hardest prison in the Habsburg Monarchy.

Besides 10 permanent expositions dedicated to Brno history, art and architecture visitors can currently enjoy magnificent view over the city from the View tower, visit a fencing tournament or listen to the bells.                                                                                                     

Permanent exhibitions: 

CASEMATES A permanent exhibition of the hardest prison of the Habsburg Monarchy as an example of a Baroque fortress architecture.

ŠPILBERK - FROM CASTLE TO FORTRESS This exposition presents the architectural development and the key changes since the 13th century, it contains archaeological discoveries and describes problems of a castle well.

ŠPILBERK – PRISON OF THE NATIONS Visitors can receive information about Špilberk, the notorious prison of Habsburg Monarchy that was well known all over Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.

BRNO AT ŠPILBERK This historical exposition presents the most significant chapters of Brno and Brno region history. It covers the era from the Middle Ages through the successful defence of the town against the Swedish troops in 1645, boom of crafts and textile industry in the 19th century until the rise of the so called Greater Brno in April 1919.

FROM RENAISSANCE TO MODERNISM
FROM MODERNISM TO PRESENT DAYS An exhibition that presents the most significant art collections of Brno City Museum such as paintings, sculptures and contemporary furniture.

FOR NEW BRNO: Modern architecture of Brno 1919 - 1939 The first and only exposition of its kind in the Czech Republic. It is devoted to Brno architecture of the interwar period in the form of collection of documents relating to the history of architecture (e.g. B. Fuchs, J. Kumpošt, A. Wiesner and many others). 

VULCANALIA  Is a permanent international exhibition about the history and the present of the art of fireworks.

THE BAROQUE PHARMACY The reinstallation of a 18th century Baroque pharmacy’s mobiliary.

SOUTHWEST BASTION (only upon previous reservation) Unique reconstructed relics of a Baroque bastion that was destroyed during the coalition wars at the behest of the emperor Napoleon in 1809.

VIEW TOWER Offers magnificent view on Brno and its surroundings.

CHIME (Bells) Chime consists of 15 bells weighing from 16 to 220 kg, which were cast by Laetitie Dytrychová in Brodek u Přerova. Relief on the bells is the work of the sculptor Otmar Oliva. The chime plays one of 32 music compositions every whole hour. The chime plays from 9 am. till 6 pm.

CHILDREN’S ART STUDIO A room dedicated mainly to children who can try on period costumes, riddle historical quizzes, fulfil enjoyable tasks and enjoy many other activities. Open only at the weekend.
